Engineering Student Receives Scholarship, Summer Internship

April 2, 2008

University of Texas at Arlington electrical engineering student Nahum Torres-Arenas will be spending this summer as an intern with the Dallas office of CDM, an international consulting, engineering, construction and operations firm. His position there is part of an awards program developed and conducted by CDM and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).

The program is open to members of SHPE who are currently studying engineering, math or science and who have maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better. CDM evaluates applications for the program and awards a $6,000 scholarship and summer intern position.

The paid internship provides selected students with the opportunity to work on a number of CDM engineering projects. A mentor is assigned to the intern for the summer and for the period of the scholarship.

Torres-Arenas is an outstanding junior with demonstrated academic and community service achievements. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society, and serves as the recording secretary for the student chapter of Eta Kappa Nu, the electrical and computer engineering honor society. He also is the historian for the student chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

To help others consider a career in engineering, Torres-Arenas works with middle and high school students during activities such as the Science Bowl and sailboard regattas. He also teaches computer skills to adults.

“I’m honored to receive this scholarship,” said Torres-Arenas, “because, in addition to its financial benefit, I’ll have the great opportunity to work with an environment friendly company and gain valuable experience.”
