CE Chair Yazdani Named Fellow of American Concrete Institute

November 16, 2008

Dr. Nur Yazdani, professor and chair of the Civil Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington, has been elected a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) in recognition of his outstanding and significant contributions to the production or use of concrete materials, products and structures in the areas of research, development, design, construction and management.

Dr. Yazdani joined the Civil Engineering Department as the chairman in the fall of 2005. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka, Bangladesh; a master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma; and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland - College Park. During his career, Dr. Yazdani has received numerous awards for his teaching and research accomplishments and has secured more than $5 million for externally-funded research projects. His research interests include concrete bridge design and rehabilitation, and disaster mitigation of civil infrastructure.

A Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and a registered professional engineer, Dr. Yazdani is the author or co-author of numerous articles published in professional journals, the co-author of a book chapter, and an invited speaker at conferences and seminars on structural engineering. He is on the editorial board of the ASCE Journal of Bridge Engineering, and he currently chairs the ACI-ASCE joint committee on concrete bridge design.

The origin of the ACI dates back to 1904 when, in an effort to bring order to the rapidly expanding use of concrete, cement manufacturers and users formed the National Association of Cement Users to establish standards and recommended practices. The name was changed in 1913, and the ACI now has chapters in the U.S. and 36 countries.

The formal announcement and presentation of Dr. Yazdani’s honor will be made at ACI’s national convention in March 2009.
