Materials Science Student Selected for Leadership Training

April 7, 2009

Mihirkumar Patel, a doctoral student in the Materials Science & Engineering Department at The University of Texas at Arlington, has received an pristigious scholarship to attend a leadership training program sponsored by the materials society ASM International (ASM). The ASM’s Materials Education Foundation presented only six of these scholarships worldwide.

The ASM’s LeaderShape Institute is a six-day program conducted each summer at the University of Illinois. The Institute presents student leaders with ways to meet the changing needs of a diverse world and helps them develop skills that will benefit them personally and that will also be valuable to the companies and industries in which they will work.

“This highly interactive program will help me strengthen my commitment to act consistently on my core ethical values and enhance my capability to develop and enrich my professional and personal relationships,” said Mr. Patel. “I expect to learn and develop traits and skills to take on the responsibilities of the next generation, contributing to society in all possible ways and helping to make the world a better place to live.”

The scholarship is valued at $1,400 and covers all expenses associated with participating in the program. Each summer session is comprised of approximately 60 students from diverse ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds.

Mr. Patel is also the director of an ASM-sponsored materials science day camp being conducted on the UT Arlington campus on July 18. Detailed information on the camp is available at ASM Materials Camp.
