Engineering Faculty Honored with University Awards

April 27, 2010

Several College of Engineering faulty members received recognition during the University’s annual Spring Meeting of the Faculty and Associates, held on April 26. Awards were presented in a variety of categories.

Industrial Engineering Professor Bill Corley, P.E., was inducted into The University of Texas at Arlington Academy of Distinguished Teachers. This honor recognizes tenured faculty for a sustained record of outstanding teaching, personal commitment to students and the learning process, and the ability to motivate and inspire students. Academy members receive a permanent salary increase, a plaque and a medallion.

Civil Engineering Senior Lecturer Dr. Yvette P. Weatherton, P.E., received the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. This award honors non-tenure track instructors who have demonstrated a record of excellence in teaching, strong personal commitment to students, and the ability to motivate, challenge and inspire.

Materials Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Professor Pranesh B. Aswath received the award for Outstanding Research Achievement or Creative Accomplishment. This award recognizes faculty members for particularly noteworthy research or creative accomplishment during the past three years.

The Graduate Dean’s Award for Excellence in Doctoral Student Mentoring had been previously announced at the Annual Celebration of Excellence by Students (ACES). It was presented to Frank L. Lewis, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Moncrief-O’Donnell Chair at the Automation & Robotics Research Institute. This award is sponsored by the Office of Graduate Studies and given to tenured or tenure-track faculty for outstanding mentoring of doctoral students.

In addition to the presentation of awards, announcements were made at the event regarding several Research Enhancement Program Grants for Academic Year 2010-11. These included:

* Dr. Shih-Ho Chao, Civil Engineering, for “Sustainable Cementitious Materials for Mitigation of Alkali-Silica Reaction and Corrosion through the Use of High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete”

* Dr. Hyeok Choi, Civil Engineering, for “Transport Characteristics of Engineered Titanium Oxide Nanoparticles in the Environment”

* Dr. Fuqiang Liu, Materials Science and Engineering, for “Ultrasound-assisted Synthesis of Polymer-encapsulated Nanoparticles as Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode Materials”

* Dr. Hyejin Moon, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, for “Digital Microfluidic High Throughput Multiplexing System for Tissue-specific Optimization.”
