UTA Professor Co-Chair of International Conference

November 8, 2002

Dr. Frank L. Lewis, professor of electrical engineering, Moncrief-O'Donnell Endowed Chair and associate director of Research of the Automation & Robotics Research Institute at The University of Texas at Arlington, is the co-chair of the 2003 Mediterranean Conference on Control and Automation (MED'03). The conference will take place June 18-20 on the Isle of Rhodes, Greece. Lewis’ co-chair for the conference is Professor Kimon P. Valavanis of the Technical University of Crete.

MED’03 is one of a series of annual conferences to bring together researchers in the Mediterranean that are focused on systems, control, robotics, and automation. Lewis and his Greek colleagues began the series eleven years ago; it fills the important function of bringing together engineers and scientists from the Mediterranean region, Europe, the U.S. and former Soviet Union countries. Several European Community funding proposals have developed from initial conversations at previous MED conferences, and joint research projects have developed that resulted in published scientific papers. The conference is being conducted under the auspices of the Mediterranean Control Association and the IEEE Control Systems Society.

Lewis is a founding member of the Mediterranean Control Association. He has had strong connections with Greek researchers and the Mediterranean region since spending six months as a Fulbright Research Professor at Democritus University in Xanthi, Greece in 1989.
