Water Treatment Courses Provide Valuable Information in Short Time

April 4, 2003

Consulting design engineers, practitioners and planners, officials of regulatory agencies; municipal, county and state engineers and professionals; and treatment plant managers can gain valuable information on water and wastewater treatment this summer when they attend the popular short course programs being offered by the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of The University of Texas at Arlington’s College of Engineering.

The courses are Water Treatment Plants: Theory and Design (August 14-16) and Wastewater Treatment Plants: Theory and Design (August 18-20). The design of water and wastewater treatment facilities requires careful planning, a clear understanding of all legal implications, considerations for future expansion and knowledge of the requirements for everyday and emergency operations and maintenance. These short courses will present recent developments in the design of municipal water and wastewater treatment facilities, current and future trends, and procedures for planning, design and operation, and security vulnerability assessment of water and wastewater treatment plants.

Both courses will be conducted by an outstanding group of professionals: § Syed R. Qasim, Ph.D., P.E., a professor of civil and environmental engineering, has over 30 years of teaching, research, and design experience. His areas of expertise are environmental engineering with emphasis in water and wastewater treatment processes and plant design. § Walter W. Chiang, P.E., chief executive officer of Chiang, Patel & Yerby Inc., has over 30 years of experience in planning, design, construction and operation of water and wastewater treatment facilities. § Michael G. Morrison, P.E., D.E.E, vice president and manager of water and wastewater engineering at Freese and Nichols, Inc. He has over 30 years of practicing design experience in both water and wastewater engineering. § Guang Zhu Ph.D., an associate with Chiang, Patel and Yerby, has over 10 years of consulting experience with Beijing Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute. § Betty L. Jordan, P.E., manager of Technology for Alan Plummer Associates, has over 20 years of consulting experience in the planning and process design of water and wastewater treatment facilities.
