Dr. Hossain Receives Major TxDOT Grant

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has awarded a two-year $538,304.00 grant to Dr. Sahadat Hossain to investigate failed slopes along existing highways and implement new slope stabilization methods for the Dallas District. The project started in September 2011 and will continue until August 2013.

Highway embankments in North Texas are predominantly constructed on highly expansive clayey soils. However, due to repeated drying and wetting cycles, clays in embankment slopes experience significant loss of strength. These cause sloughing and shallow slope failures in many of the embankment slopes in and around north Texas and pose a significant slope maintenance problem for TxDOT. Most of these slides are limited to a depth of 6-8 ft. A new technique for slope stabilization for shallow slides has been developed using recycled plastic pins. The slope stabilizing method utilizes a distributed network of pins, constructed from recycled plastics and other waste materials. This method of slope stabilization has been successfully utilized in other states, like Missouri and Kansas. However, slope stabilization using Recycled Plastic Pins has not been utilized in Texas.

Dr. Hossain and his research team successfully implemented the slope stabilization using Recycled Plastic Pins (RPP) at US 287 near Waxahachie for the first time in Texas as part of their previous research grant from TxDOT. The RPP had been installed at two sections and one other area is considered to serve as control section. At US 287 slope, 460 pins were installed perpendicular to the slope face in just 4 (four) days. The stabilized site has been instrumented and monitored for lateral movements, strains within the reinforcing pins, and lateral loads applied to the pins. Project’s Principal Investigator Dr. Hossain says “Both sections of the stabilized slopes are performing well and the instrumentation data suggests that the pins have significant remaining capacity to maintain the stability of the slopes”.

As part of the new research grant, two more failed slopes at varying soil types and different locations around Dallas District will be stabilized using RPP. The stabilized site will be instrumented and monitored for lateral movements, strains within the reinforcing pins, and lateral loads applied to the pins. Associate Professor of Civil Engineering Dr. Sahadat Hossain and four Ph.D. students will be working on the project.
