Friday, May 13, 2011
It has been more than six years since UTA has hosted the Region IV American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Student Paper Conference, but even after such an extended break, faculty, students and visitors alike are toting the event’s return, on April 30, a success. The conference, which hosted 70 participants, was a joint venture between the North Texas Professional Section of AIAA and the Student Chapter here at UT Arlington. A number of notable institutions took part in the weekend endeavor including, Baylor University, Texas A&M University and the University of New Mexico.
In addition to playing successful hosts, UTA’s College of Engineering students also took home a number of awards.
Monica Hew won both the Undergraduate Award category for her paper based on “Ultra-low Power Passive Wireless Strain Sensor System,” and the Freshman/Sophomore Award for her paper on “Aviation Safety and Structural Health Monitoring System.” With her wins in tow, Hew will go on to compete at the Aerospace Sciences Meeting in January 2012.
In the Team Award division, UTA students Cody Ground, Matthew Crisanti and Jared Poempipatana took second for their work titled, “Design and Operation of a Thermal Protection Material Test Sample Holder for use in Arc-Heated Wind Tunnel.”
