Monday, October 31, 2016
A paper by UTA assistant professor of electrical engineering Ramtin Madani, in collaboration with researchers at the University of California – Berkeley, won the 2016 Best Publication Award in Energy from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) Section on Energy, Natural Resources, and the Environment.
The awards are given annually to the best refereed journal articles in energy, natural resources and environment and sustainability.
“It is an honor to have our work recognized by INFORMS. Our research concerns the development of computational methods for improved efficiency, reliability and security of nationwide power grids as well as the realization of renewable energy. I hope that our work will lead to greater discoveries in this area.” Madani said.
In a series of papers, Madani and his colleagues have developed a mathematical foundation for solving large-scale power optimization problems. The winning paper, “Convex Relaxation for Optimal Power Flow Problem: Mesh Networks”, focuses on one of these long-standing problems that have been studied by multiple research communities.
The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences is the largest society in the world for professionals in the field of operations research, management science, and analytics. The Section on Energy, Natural Resources, and the Environment was formed as a special interest group on energy applications of the Operations Research Society of America. The scope was later expanded to include issues relating to both renewable and non-renewable natural resources and the environment.
