Southern Graphics Council International Juried Members Exhibition and Visual Elegy
January 22 – February 16, 2019
Exhibition: February 25 – March 30, 2019
Reception: March 1, 5:30 – 8 pm
The Gallery at UTA is pleased to present the SGCI Juried Members Exhibition and Visual Elegy in conjunction with the Southern Graphics Council International conference taking place at locations throughout the DFW Metroplex in early March. SGCI is a non-profit educational organization that represents artists of original prints, drawings, books and handmade paper. With over 1,500 professional and student members, the group focuses on promoting an understanding of the role of printmaking in art and society. The juried exhibition, as part of the annual conference, offers SGCI’s members an opportunity to share their artistic ideas and innovations with each other and gallery visitors.
Adjudicated by internationally-recognized artist Jane Hammond, this year’s Juried Members Exhibition is a selection of 49 diverse artworks chosen for exhibition from entries submitted by the SGCI membership. Technically and conceptually wide-ranging, the show offers an impressive visual experience celebrating the graphic arts. Visual Elegy, showing concurrently with the members exhibition, is a print portfolio created in response to Appalachian Elegy, a book of poetry written by bell hooks, a well-known author, activist, feminist and artist. The exhibition, organized by Kentucky artist and professor Nicole Hand, features works by 25 women artists whose images are contemplative reflections on hooks’ poetry and life.
There will be an opening reception for the exhibition on Friday, March 1 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm, with brief remarks by Nancy Palmeri, UTA art professor and SGCI conference co-coordinator, beginning at 6:30 pm The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
