Honors Academy

The University of Texas at Arlington Honors College offers an outstanding program of study for exceptionally motivated high school students. Enroll and earn up to eight credit hours per semester towards your college degree while also meeting your high school graduation requirements. You can enroll in any UTA semester for as long as you are officially a high school student. You may choose from a multiplicity of college courses. You will be challenged to investigate new ideas from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and will be taught by and interact with top research faculty.

Honors Academy students participate in a variety of academic, social, and recreational activities. The UT Arlington Art Gallery, movies, barbeques, musical and theatrical performances, swimming, and tennis all provide an enriching opportunity to interact with Honors faculty and students. The Honors Academy will celebrate and recognize academic excellence with a banquet for students, parents, faculty, and staff at the end of the term.

Advanced Placement* Summer Institute

The College Board offers a variety of professional development opportunities year-round, principally through workshops and summer institutes. For teachers, these course-specific training opportunities are designed to support the new or experienced teacher in all aspects of AP* course content, organization, and methodology. Participants will receive invaluable training from College Board certified AP* and Pre AP* instructors. Participants will leave with a renewed sense of enthusiasm as well as practical ideas and resource materials for challenging their students in the coming year.

Texas Regional History Day

The UT Arlington History Department and the Honors College host an annual Regional History Day.

Texas History Day, a part of the National History Day program, is a yearlong education program that culminates in an annual state-level history fair for students in grades six through twelve. It provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their interest in and knowledge of history through creative and original papers, performances, documentaries, or three-dimensional exhibits.

Over the course of the school year, students research and produce a History Day entry, the results of which are presented at a regional competition in early spring. From there, some students advance to the state fair in May, or even to the national contest held each June at the University of Maryland at College Park. At each level of competition, outstanding achievement may be recognized through certificates, medals, trophies, or monetary awards. The most important rewards are the skills and insight that students acquire as they move through the History Day program.

As many as 10,000 young Texans are involved in the program at the regional and state level each year. More than 800 students participate in Texas History Day, and approximately 50 students represent Texas at National History Day each year.

The University of Texas at Arlington Honors College and History Department will host the Region 21 History Day competition on Saturday, March 3, 2012. Approximately 300 students in the sixth through twelfth grades from throughout Tarrant County are expected to participate.

This year's theme, Revolution, Reaction and Reform, challenges students to research projects answering the questions of time and place, cause and effect, change over time, impact and significance. The five categories include historical papers, performances, documentaries, exhibits, and web sites. Students who place first and second will progress to the Texas History Day in Austin on May 4th & 5th at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Winners at Texas History Day will be entered in National History Day in June in College Park, Maryland.

The judging will take place from 10a.m. - 3:00p.m. Exhibits will be open to the public from noon until 2:00p.m. They will be located on the lower level of the E.H. Hereford Center in the Palo Duro Lounge. The awards ceremony will begin at Rosebud Theater.
