Part III. Your Personal Statement
The Essay:

Note: The essay topic changes on the first day of each month. You should therefore plan carefully if you intend to take some time to complete the essay portion of the application. The Honors College Admissions Committee will consider your essay in accordance with the assigned topic for your submission month.

Directions: In 400-500 words, analyze the issue presented and explain your views on it. There is no "correct" answer. Instead, you should consider a range of perspectives as you develop your own position on the issue.

This month's prompt:
What does "home" mean to you?

The essay complements the objective information in your test scores and résumé. The Admissions Committee will read it carefully. Your essay also demonstrates how well you organize your thoughts and express yourself in writing. Because it says much about you, it should be thoughtfully composed and carefully produced.

Tips for writing the essay:

  • Address the prompt. Write a clear argument that responds to the issue.
  • Support your argument with concrete examples.
  • Be specific. Avoid sweeping generalizations.
  • Avoid clichés.
  • Write to express, not to impress. Communicate your ideas clearly.
  • Organize your essay logically.
  • Avoid unnecessary formatting (italics, borders, etc.).
  • When writing college essays, “don’t” is “do not”. In other words, do not use contractions.
  • If using sources, cite them appropriately.
  • Proofread carefully for grammatical and typographical errors.

Keep in mind this essay is an academic endeavor. Given this, your submission should not include informal or conversational language. If you are currently enrolled at UT Arlington, we encourage you to visit the Writing Center (http://www.uta.edu/owl/) for feedback and assistance on your writing sample.
