Keynote SpeakerDr. John Esling, secretary of the IPA "The Laryngeal Sphincter as an Articulator: How Register and Phonation Interact with Vowel Quality and Tone" Using direct laryngoscopic observation in reinterpreting the articulatory phonetic framework for pharyngeal and laryngeal qualities, Professor Esling explains the role of the laryngeal sphincter mechanism in the production of tonal register, vowel quality contrasts, pharyngeal stricture types, and states of the glottis. John H. Esling comes to the 10th Annual UTA Student Conference in Linguistics from the University of Victoria where he is Professor of Linguistics. Dr. Esling also has the distinction of being the Secretary of the International Phonetic Association. His credentials include a B.A. in History, Political Science and Languages from Northwestern University, an M.A. in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in Phonetics from the University of Edinburgh. He taught at the University of Leeds before arriving at the University of Victoria in 1981. His main work is in the areas of Phonetics and Applied Linguistics, and his research is on the auditory categorization of voice quality and on the phonetic production of laryngeal and pharyngeal speech. He is the author of the University of Victoria Phonetic Database on CD-ROM and an editor of the Handbook of the IPA, having also participated in the development of several phonetics teaching and speech analysis software programs. Several of Dr. Esling's most recent works include: Crosslinguistic aspects of voice quality. 2000. In R.D. Kent & M.J. Ball (Eds.), Voice quality measurement (pp. 25-35). Yumi Nakamura Prize in LinguisticsThe Yumi Nakamura Prize in Linguistics has been established to honor the memory of Ms. Yumi Nakamura, a Linguistics student who died at UT Arlington in January 2000. Her family and the Program in Linguistics have contributed funds to be awarded to the best student papers at the UTA Student Conference in Linguistics. A maximum of 3 prizes will be awarded in amounts up to $400 USD. All students presenting papers are eligible to be included in the competition for the prize. The prize will be awarded at the Friday evening session. Read more about the Yumi Nakamura Memorial Endowment at the department's Giving Opportunities page. PurposeThe University of Texas at Arlington Student Conference in Linguistics & TESOL is a student-led conference specifically designed to give graduate students a chance to present their original research. This is a great opportunity to join students from across America and around the world to present research on language. |
