What is Mathematics?

One dictionary defines mathematics as the science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations, and generalizations. The question “What is math?” has been debated for almost 1,500 years, and there still seems to be no definitive answer. While scientists might debate the meaning of mathematics, there is no argument about its importance. Knowledge of mathematics plays a significant role in helping us understand key concepts of various subjects including physics and other sciences, economics, and even art and music. Mathematicians analyze data and apply mathematical and statistical techniques to solve real-world problems in science, engineering, healthcare, business, and other fields.
