MAA and AWM will be holding our bi-annual Game Night this Friday, April 26th, from 7pm - 10pm in PKH 305. Come play games and eat free pizza with us to de-stress before finals. If you have any games or people you would like to bring, we encourage you to bring them!!

"AWM Last Meeting and Game Night"

Hello everyone,

The Association for Women in Mathematics will be having our last meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, April 24th, from 12pm - 1pm in PKH 305.

Our speaker will be Dr. Majie Fan, an associate professor from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, and her presentation is titled "Probing mountain building processes and ancient climate". As always, there will be free pizza.

I have two other announcements for everyone:

  • We are still looking for AWM officers for the next year! The positions that are available are president, vice president, and secretary, and they are open to anybody who is interested - you don't have to be a woman, a mathematics student, or an undergraduate student! Each officer position description is listed below. Please email me at lei.mashimo@mavs.uta.edu if you are interested in becoming an AWM officer.
  • We will be having our joint Game Night with MAA this coming Friday, April 26th, from 7pm - 10pm. Come de-stress before finals and join us in playing games, hanging out, and eating free pizza with your fellow math students! Feel free to bring your own games as well!

Lastly, I would like to thank everybody who has supported AWM this past semester by coming out to our meetings, holding a review for us, or even just showing interest in joining the organization. AWM has had a great semester, with all female faculty speaking at our meetings to show what women have done and can do in STEM, and I hope you all have enjoyed hearing about it as much as I have.

I hope you see you all at our last meeting tomorrow, and/or at game night on Friday!

Sincerely,
Lei Mashimo
AWM President

"AWM Meeting and Officer Elections"

Hello everyone,

Happy Monday and Happy April! I hope your week is going well.

The Association for Women in Mathematics will be having a meeting this Wednesday, April 10th, from 12pm - 1pm in PKH 305. Come hear Dr. Ming Li, an assistant professor from UTA's department of computer science and engineering, give her presentation on Mobile Computing and Security. As always, there will be free pizza.

In other news, AWM will be holding officer elections at our last meeting on Wednesday, April 24th, for all positions. Anybody is welcome to run for an officer position, regardless of gender, major, or year of study! The position is a great resume booster and provides a lot of leadership experience, so I highly encourage anybody who is interested to apply. The available positions and their descriptions are listed below, and if you are interested please email me at lei.mashimo@mavs.uta.edu with a brief description about yourself and why you'd like to be an officer, preferably before Monday, April 22nd.

I hope to see you all at our meeting on Wednesday.

Sincerely,
Lei Mashimo

"MAA Announcements"

Hello everyone!

I have several things to cover in this email and they're all important, so please read to the end.

First of all, our next meeting will be this Wednesday (4/2) at 12 pm. Our speaker will be graduate student Ian Lim and he will be speaking about graded algebras and non-commutative geometry.

We will be having elections on 4/17 during our normal meeting time. All four positions are open; below I've listed them and their responsibilities:

President: Run each meeting, book speakers for each meeting, serve as the primary contact for the organization, and manage the organization.

Vice president: Organize the reviews (book rooms, obtain review exams) and other fundraising efforts.

Treasurer: Manage finances, purchase food and supplies necessary for each meeting.

Secretary: Distribute information about meetings and events, manage social media.

If you have any questions regarding these positions or are interested in running please send your emails to marah.townzen@mavs.uta.edu

Also during our 4/17 meeting, I'd like to open the floor to undergraduates. We have time for two 10-15 minute presentations about any math-related topic of your choosing. This could be a research project you're currently working on, something related to pop culture or video games, etc. As long as it is math based, it's fair game! Again, contact the email above if you're interested.
