Childhood behavior

UTA researchers have found that by age 3 environmental influences such as parenting are relevant factors in the development of toddlers' self-control when they are asked not to do something they want to do, Science 2.0, MedIndia, Science Daily, Science Codex, PsyPost, Medical News Today and many other media websites reported. Extended solitary confinement

Jaya Davis, a UTA assistant professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, said extended solitary confinement could have negative effects on young prisoners like Ethan Couch in a WFAA Channel 8 story. Couch is the 19-year-old who at 16 killed four people in a drunken driving incident. "The effects of not being able to interact with people for a long period of time give them difficulties in being able to integrate back into society when they're released,” Davis said.

College degree attainment

Omar Ramirez, a UTA mechanical engineering student, was interviewed about his struggles to attain a college degree, the Houston Chronicle reported. The article was about a recently released book, "Lives in Limbo," by Roberto Gonzales, a Harvard University assistant professor. The book details undocumented students' plight in trying to attain that higher education degrees. 

Seeking sustainable solutions

The International Solid Waste Association held its winter school in January 2016 at The University of Texas at Arlington and its lab at the city of Denton landfill, The Global Methane Initiative Blog reported. Solid waste professionals from 27 countries participated in the school, which focused on sustainable waste management of landfills.

New role

Rudy Janecka has joined Champions DFW Commercial Realty as its new director of retail services, CoStar News reported. Janecka earned a UTA bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Panel discussion

Don Gatzke, UTA professor in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs, will moderate the Dallas Architecture Forum’s panel discussion of “The Social Impact of Greening the City” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at The Dallas Center for Architecture, 1909 Woodall Rogers Freeway, Suite 100, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Texas Scottish Festival at Maverick Stadium

The Texas Scottish Festival and Highland Games will be May 13-15 at UTA’s Maverick Stadium, the Star-Telegram reported in a guide to DFW spring festivals.

WNBA draft party

The Dallas Wings hosted a WNBA draft party Thursday at UTA’s College Park Center, where the team will play its home games, The Dallas Morning News and Dallas CultureMap reported. The Wings, who moved here from Tulsa, have their 2016 home opener May 8. With the fifth pick, the Wings drafted Aerial Powers, a 6-0 Michigan State forward.
