Better roads

Two civil engineering researchers at UTA are working with the Texas Department of Transportation to better monitor and predict soil weakness, which can lead to slope failures on state highways, Engineering Business Daily reported. Mohsen Shahandashti, assistant professor of civil engineering, and Sahadat Hossain, civil engineering professor, are working on two, two-year projects worth $518,245 combined.

Wheelchair treadmill

A UTA senior design project team built a treadmill that can be used by athletes in wheelchairs, Dallas Innovates reported. The impetus for the project started with Movin’ Mavs Coach Doug Garner, who wanted something that gave his players a good workout and measured how much effort they were expending.

Faculty honors

Sharareh (Sherri) Kermanshachi, an assistant professor in the UTA Department of Civil Engineering, won the 2018 Design-Build Institute of America Distinguished Leadership Award in the faculty category after an international search, 7th Space reported.
