A sport that’s still going strong

While other sports are sidelined, UTA’s esports team continues to practice, play and win

There’s one sport at The University of Texas at Arlington that hasn’t been sidelined during the nationwide shutdown.

UTA’s new esports team—which participates in competitive and organized video gaming—has continued to practice, play and win.

“We still have weekly practices and scrimmages,” said Drew Boehm, coach in the esports division of Campus Recreation. “The tournaments and competitions are still ongoing, all online and streamed.

The Mavericks won the first-ever Electronic Gaming Federation Rocket League tournament and season, placing first after beating out the University of Delaware. They also placed second in the Collegiate League of Legends Tournament, losing to host UT Dallas after battling a tough field that included schools from around the country.

Camden Johnson, a freshman team member majoring in real estate, said being able to continue with esports has been a highlight during this period of social distancing.

“It’s important for me to interact with my teammates,” Johnson said. “It makes me feel confident, and I think we can continue to win future tournaments.

Boehm believes that esports is in a unique position because its participants can experience it remotely.

“Many people in our country are uneasy right now,” Boehm said. “Playing or watching esports is a safe way to stay entertained and remain social from within your home.”
