Services scheduled for Movin' Mavs coach

ARLINGTON - Coach Jim Hayes, of The University of Texas at Arlington’s seven-time National Wheelchair Basketball title-winning Movin’ Mavs, died Saturday, May 24. Coach Hayes graduated from UT Arlington in 1974 and founded the Wheelchair Basketball and Tennis Program after coming to work for the University in 1976. An accomplished wheelchair road racer, he won a gold medal in the 1984 Paralympic Games. Coach Hayes loved fishing and the guitar and volunteered countless hours to the National Wheelchair Veteran Games.

There will be a visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, in the UT Arlington Practice Gym in the Physical Education Building, 801 Greek Row. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, also in the gym.
