The University of Texas at Arlington’s Office of Sustainability rolls out a new car-sharing program Wednesday, Feb. 4, as part of its commitment to creating a more sustainable campus for students, faculty and staff.

Zipcar, the world's leading car sharing network, is open to those over 18 years of age and who have been licensed for at least one year (domestic and international). Students, faculty or staff may join the membership program for $25, then pay $7.50 per hour or $69 a day to reserve one of four vehicles parked on campus.

The cost includes gas, insurance, 24-hour roadside assistance, wireless technology, and other features. Visit for more information.

“This is an innovative and cost-effective form of transportation that will help the entire UT Arlington community,” said Meghna Tare, director of the UT Arlington Office of Sustainability. “Based on our research, Zipcar will prove especially beneficial for our growing international population.”

Total University enrollment surpassed 40,000 students this year. A significant number are international students living on or near the Arlington campus. In spring 2014, 1,289 students from India alone were enrolled at UTA.

“Many of our international students come to Texas with no means of transportation. In addition to reducing the number of vehicles on campus and need for parking spaces, Zipcar will provide the students with a convenient option for getting to the grocery store, a doctor’s appointment, or to meet research and study needs that carry them across the state,” Tare said.

The new Zipcar program will initially offer four vehicles: a Ford Escape and Focus, Nissan Versa and Volkswagen Golf. The vehicles will be parked in two locations: in the Meadow Run Apartments parking lot behind the Swift Center, and in Lot 39, just south of the UTA Bookstore. See the campus map at

“By bringing Zipcar to UT Arlington, the school is offering a convenient alternative to bringing a car to campus,” said Katelyn Lopresti, general manager of Zipcar University. “The Zipcar program will give students, as well as faculty and staff, the freedom of having a car without the expense or hassles.”

Zipcar said, on average, when car owners switch to car sharing, the number miles driven per member is reduced by 50 percent. The company said its “Zipsters” save over $500 a month and members of Zipcar and other car-sharing programs report a 47 percent increase in public transit trips, a 10 percent increase in bicycling trips, and a 26 percent increase in walking trips.
