The University of Texas at Arlington’s legendary Movin’ Mavs wheelchair basketball team remains a national powerhouse, with four current or former players named to the National Wheelchair Basketball Association’s national team.

Team USA selected Junior Movin’ Mav Fabian Romo and graduates Mike Paye, Aaron Gouge and Jorge Sanchez. Paye is a three-time Paralympian and was the co-captain of the 2016 men’s national team. Gouge earned a gold medal in the 2016 Paralympic games.

Romo, Pay, Gouge and Sanchez are part of a 17-member roster that will be trimmed to 12 members before Team USA travels to the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation world championship games in Hamburg, Germany in August.

The Movin' Mavs won the 2017 National Wheelchair Basketball Association Intercollegiate Championship.

“It’s a real honor to be named to the national team, and it shows that the hard work we put in every day on the Movin’ Mavs truly does pay off,” Romo said. “I’m proud to represent UTA, a university that is developing leaders and champions on and off the court.”

The Movin’ Mavs men’s wheelchair basketball team is the reigning national intercollegiate champion and has claimed eight national titles in its almost three decades of play.

UTA was one of the first universities in the nation to begin a wheelchair basketball program, and was the first to offer full-ride scholarships to student athletes playing adapted sports. The university continues to be a trailblazer in enhancing access for students of all abilities to transformational educational opportunities. With its minor in disability studies, one of only about 30 in the nation, UTA is viewed as a leader in disability rights and inclusion.

“Rosie and I offer our sincere congratulations to these gifted student athletes and to UTA for its continuing commitment to accessibility and equality,” said Mike Moncrief former State Representative, Tarrant County Judge, Texas State Senator, Fort Worth Mayor and a longtime supporter of disability rights. “We have attended Movin’ Mavs games and are continually impressed by the skills these players show on the court and the character they display in life.”
