The University of Texas at Arlington’s School of Social Work has been ranked the 28th best online master of social work degree program in the nation, SocialWorkGuide.org reported.

SocialWorkGuide.org is a leading career- and education-focused website that provides comprehensive information about social work degree programs, careers and licensing requirements in the United States.

UTA's School of Social Work

UTA's School of Social Work earned a national ranking for its online master of social work degree.

Scott Ryan, UTA School of Social Work dean, credited the online program’s success with the fact that it mirrors what is learned in the classroom.

“Our online program gives students the same breadth of knowledge they need to be successful in the professional world,” Ryan said. “We have a dedicated faculty who teach the online courses with the same vigor our faculty uses in a traditional classroom. The online students leave us with the same job considerations that traditional classroom students have.”

SocialWorkGuide.org only included schools with online master’s programs in social work at schools with not-for-profit status and accreditation from one of the six regional accreditation agencies in the United States recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to be considered. Schools also were screened for accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education. The online master’s degrees on the list are equivalent to degrees granted to traditional, on-campus students.

The rankings are based on academic excellence, student experience and support, and graduate success. Its methodology considers such data points as the average tuition cost per online credit hour, graduation rate, the percentage of tenured faculty and school rankings according to trusted college evaluation sources.

Rob Voce, founder of SocialWorkGuide.org, said, “As more students look to online programs to earn an advanced degree, schools are developing online master’s in social work programs equivalent in quality and rigor to traditional on-campus programs. It can be difficult for prospective students to sift the data available to find a program that’s a good fit. Our list is unique as it helps identify each program’s strengths, while focusing on the elements that are most important to those considering an online MSW program.”

As well as providing data for the ranking factors of included programs, the 2018 Best Online Master’s in Social Work Degree Programs ranking includes in-depth information on schools’ admissions statistics and requirements, tuition comparisons for in-state, out-of-state and online students; and the services and support available to online students.

Earlier this year, U.S. News and World Report ranked the graduate programs of UTA’s School of Social Work at No. 34 in the nation for 2019, up four positions from the year before.

UTA estimated that more than 90 percent of the 115 master’s and doctoral students graduating in spring 2018 will have positions in the workforce upon leaving the University.

Funding for School of Social Work research projects also is steadily increasing, with grants awarded growing from $1.9 million to $3.06 million between 2014 and 2017. Research expenditures, a measure of funds directly spent on projects, also increased from $2.3 million to $3.6 million over the last four years, a 36 percent increase.

Another indicator of the success of UTA’s numerous joint student-faculty collaborations was reflected in the large number of presentations made by the School at the 2018 Society for Social Work and Research Conference in Washington, D.C., in January.
