This year’s day of service during Arlington’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. events has been named after longtime UTA employee Zeb Strong Jr.

Strong, a 1988 UTA alumnus who earned a bachelor’s degree in political science, served the University in a number of roles and had a positive effect on the lives of countless students. He was a tremendous champion of students and an ambassador for the University. He also was a  tireless advocate for opportunity.

MLK events are Friday, Jan. 19, through Monday, Jan. 21.

This year’s day of service starts at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21. Volunteers meet at Mission Metroplex, 400 W. South St., for assignments, tools and supplies. The first 300 volunteers will receive a free MLK 2019 commemorative t-shirt. Continental breakfast also is provided. Sign up to volunteer at www.ArlingtonMLK.com.

The MLK Advancing the Dream Awards Banquet is at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, in the Bluebonnet Ballroom in the E.H. Hereford University Center, 300 W. First St. UTA President Vistasp Karbhari will provide welcome remarks.

Donna Brazile, a veteran Democratic political strategist, adjunct professor, author, syndicated columnist and television political commentator, will deliver the address. Tickets are $55. Tables of eight are $440. Purchase them at www.UTATickets.com.

The popular MLK Step Show Competition is at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Bowie High School Auditorium, 2101 Highbank Drive. Admission is $10 at the door and $5 for all elementary students and children under 5. A limited number of $5 pre-sale tickets are available at the AISD Administration Building, 1203 W. Pioneer Parkway.

A Poetry Meets Jazz event, ecumenical service, day of service festival and youth musical event also are planned. Visit www.ArlingtonMLK.com for details about these events.

Since 1989, the Arlington Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Celebration Committee has been comprised of members from the city of Arlington, UTA, Arlington Independent School District, Tarrant  County College and Arlington Ministerial Association with generous support from many sponsors,  contributors and hundreds of volunteers.
