Record-breaking enrollment

UTA’s Spring 2019 record-breaking enrollment is up about 3 percent when compared to Spring 2018 figures, KTVT CBS 11, NBCDFW.com, the Fort Worth Business Press, KLIF 570 AM and WBAP 820 AM reported.

Professor elected to academy

Dereje Agonafer, Jenkins Garrett Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington, has been elected to the prestigious National Academy of Engineering, First Bell and the Fort Worth Business Press reported. He is one of only two faculty members from Texas universities selected this year. First Bell is the American Society for Engineering Education’s newsletter.

TRIO funding

TRIO programs at The University of Texas at Arlington received $200,000 in supplemental grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education to support STEM education and student access to UTA, Targeted News Service reported.

Tweets inappropriate

Brent Sasley, UTA associate professor of political science, wrote a Washington Post opinion piece about the controversy over U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar’s tweets that were viewed as being anti-Semitic.

Alumna profiled

Valerie Landry, manager of Arlington’s Sanford House, was profiled in a Fort Worth Business Press story about the inn and spa. Landry said her UTA MBA came in handy in marketing and managing the bed-and-breakfast company.

Transit desert

Arlington has experienced success through its Via rideshare program but some think the city still lacks significant mass transit, the Texarkana Gazette, FutureStructure and Newsbug.info reported. Diane Allen, UTA’s director of landscape architecture, has written a book on transit deserts and insists Arlington is still one. “I think there’s definitely a need for mass transit,” Allen said. “Via is proving you need more of it.
