NIH fellowship
UTA bioengineering doctoral student Aneetta Kuriakose has become the first student from the university to be awarded a pre-doctoral fellowship by the National Institutes of Health, Dallas Innovates reported. The fellowship will support research into a new minimally invasive treatment for peripheral artery disease.
Coral disease research
Researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution say a coral disease has spread from southern Florida to the U.S. Virgin Islands, CapeCod.com reported. Laura Mydlarz, UTA professor and associate chair of biology, is one of the researchers on the project. The team is learning more about the disease’s pathology, how it may be spreading through the ocean and how coral immune systems are responding to it.
Complex appeals to students
The Park Place apartment complex in downtown Arlington is changing the Arlington skyline and could change the economic dynamics of downtown, too, the Fort Worth Business Press reported in an O.K. Carter column. The complex, scheduled for completion next summer, is just east of UTA’s main campus and has floor plans that appeal to student life.
Battery research
UTA researchers conducted a survey for the U.S. Navy that evaluated energy density, storage and life of batteries. Skeleton Technologies, based in Großröhrsdorf, Germany, ranked first in that comparative study, Wirtschaft reported.
