National Voter Registration Day
The UTA Student Government held a voter registration drive for National Voter Registration Day, KTVT CBS 11 reported. Organizations in North Texas and across the country hit the streets to increase awareness of voter registration opportunities and reach voters who may not register otherwise.
UTA Esports
KESN 103.3 FM ESPN Radio featured an interview with UTA’s assistant director of esports, Drew Boehm. Boehm commented on the rise of collegiate esports and the Battle4Texas Overwatch competition.
Bob Woodward at UTA
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bob Woodward visited UTA as part of the University’s Maverick Speakers Series, the Dallas Observer reported. Woodward promoted his new book, Fear: Trump in the White House, and discussed the state of the presidency.
Future leader in transportation design and construction
The American Road & Transportation Builders Association Foundation awarded Sheida Khademi the Future Industry Leader Spotlight Award, Washington Newsline and Construction Equipment Guide reported. Khademi is pursuing a doctorate in civil engineering at UTA, where she received a master's in the same subject in 2017.
Testing asphalt for Texas roads
UTA civil engineering professor Stefan Romanoschi is working with the Texas Department of Transportation to test the durability of roads made from recycled asphalt using an accelerated pavement testing machine that he built, Scienmag reported. Romanoschi was granted a two-year, $1.26 million TxDOT award to determine which mixes of recycled asphalt will last longer and work better on the surface layers of Texas roads.
Drones and parking
Larry Cummings from UTA’s Parking and Transportation Services discussed with Parking Today how the department uses drones. Drone footage aids the department with traffic planning, parking lot lighting, space utilization and other projects.
