Educational sabotage

A study published in the journal Violence Against Women by a domestic violence expert at The University of Texas at Arlington focuses on an overlooked form of psychological abuse—educational sabotage, Phys.org, Scienmag, Science Daily and Sweden’s Aurus reported. Rachel Voth Schrag, an assistant professor in the School of Social Work, said educational sabotage is a form of coercive control that directly affects a survivor's efforts to obtain educational credentials. 

Studying protein family

A U.S. research group, led by UTA Kwangho Nam, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, is working on an NIH-funded project that maps the workings of the protein family kinases, Sweden’s Expertsvar reported. Nam is collaborating with researchers at Umeå University. Nam worked in an Umeå University lab. 

Protecting privacy

Researchers at UTA and the Rochester Institute of Technology are investigating how adversarial examples could prevent potential privacy leaks, Sky Statement reported in a compilation story about artificial intelligence, security and privacy projects. 

Gubernatorial appointment

Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Becky Johnson as chair of the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists, Targeted News Service reported. Johnson earned her Bachelor of Science in geology from UTA. 

Esports timeline

An Austin Chronicle story about the timeline of esports in Texas showed UTA launching its varsity program this fall and hosting the inaugural Battle4Texas Overwatch tournament last month.

Medal of Honor museum

UTA was mentioned as one of the draws for the city of Arlington landing the first National Medal of Honor Museum, Business Wire reported. The museum, scheduled to open in 2024, will be near Arlington’s Globe Life Park and AT&T Stadium. 

New wheelchair

Mountain America presented Tommy Hambicki, a former UTA Movin’ Mavs player, with a new customized wheelchair, Phoenix’s KPNX News 12 reported.
