Alumnus starts financial markets lab

Sam Mahrouq, chairman of ikonGPS, donated $500,000 to UTA’s College of Business to establish an active financial markets lab for UTA students, CBS WBOC 16 in Maryland reported. Mahrouq is a 1991 UTA alumnus.

UTA to inspect, analyze Waxahachie sewer system

The Waxahachie City Council approved a UTA project that will inspect and analyze the city’s sanitary sewer system pipelines, the Waxahachie Daily Light reported. Ali Abolmaali, UTA chair of the Civil Engineering Department, will lead the project.

Cleese awarded Kovacs award

Bart Weiss, UTA associate professor of film, told KRLD 1080 AM Tuesday about the Dallas VideoFest’s 2019 Ernie Kovacs award going to Monty Python’s John Cleese yesterday. The award recognizes Kovacs’ groundbreaking work in the 1950s and early 1960s as a television comedian pioneer. Weiss founded the Dallas VideoFest.

Granger facing primary challenger

U.S. Rep. Kay Granger from Fort Worth might be facing the toughest Republican primary battle she’s had since taking office in 1997, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Granger “will have name recognition, and the importance of that can’t be underestimated,” said Rebecca Deen, chair and associate professor of UTA’s Political Science Department. 

UTA volleyball to play in NIVC tournament

The UTA volleyball team will face UT San Antonio in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at College Park Center, VolleyballMag.com reported. NIVC announced its 32 team field this week.
