Veteran graduates

Steve Kennedy, a Vietnam War veteran, received his bachelor’s degree in history this spring decades after he attended UT Arlington when University officials determined he had the proper number of credit hours to graduate, KTVT CBS 11 reported. Kennedy’s son-in-law completed a school assignment that led officials down that investigatory path.

COVID answers

Erin Carlson, associate clinical professor and director of graduate public health programs at UT Arlington’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation; and Mamta Jain, professor of internal medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center; recently held a public conversation with Anna Kuchment, Dallas Morning News science writer, about coronavirus and what North Texans need to know as the state reopens. Public call-in questions ranged from how safe is it to resume activities to what supplements might help fight the virus to whether it’s safe to get a haircut.

Strengthening riverbanks

Two UT Arlington researchers, Associate Professor Xinbao Yu and Professor Laureano Hoyos, are working with the Texas Department of Transportation on new technology that could strengthen riverbanks and eliminate harmful erosion around bridge supports, ForConstructionPros.com reported.

Alumna profiled

Wendy Okolo, a UT Arlington alumna and aerospace research engineer at NASA, was interviewed on South Africa’s Radio 702’s Africa State of Mind program about her successful career.

Startup in contest

A University of Texas at Arlington student startup business is one of 42 college teams participating in the virtual Rice Business Plan competition June 17-19, the Houston Chronicle reported. The coronavirus lockdown caused the cancellation of the March event. Student teams will compete for $1.5 million in cash prizes.

New Lady Movin' Mav

Alexus Cook signed her letter of intent to play wheelchair basketball with the Lady Movin’ Mavs, KENS CBS 5 reported in a feature on San Antonio’s George Gervin Academy graduate.
