Postponed commencement

UTA has tentatively selected Nov. 19 to 22 for in-person commencement ceremonies, although the university could postpone them further depending on what happens with COVID-19 cases, The Dallas Morning News reported. Administrators are monitoring the ongoing situation and will communicate a decision by Oct. 1, Lisa Nagy, vice president for student affairs, said in a letter to students Monday in which she announced the tentative dates of the ceremonies.

International students

UTA is among the North Texas schools planning to offer both online and in-person courses for the fall 2020 semester, KTVT CBS 11 reported. Under new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement guidance, as long as the course load for an international student contains a mix of online and in-person classes, like under UTA’s blended model, they can remain in the U.S. But if only enrolled in online courses, they must either transfer or leave the country.

Impact of microaggressions

Alison Hall Birch, a UTA assistant professor in the College of Business, co-authored an article for the Harvard Business Review about the microaggressions Black Americans can face in the workplace and the deleterious impact they can have on an employee’s experience, health and well-being.

Earhart Fellow

A doctoral student in aerospace engineering at UTA is one of 35 Amelia Earhart Fellows for 2020, Engineering Business Daily reported. Katiyayni (Kati) Balachandran is the sixth UTA student selected by the Zonta International Foundation for the honor, joining Mousumi Ahmed, Jennifer Goss, Laura Henderson, Monica Hew and Wendy Okolo.
