Veterans Day tree dedication

The UT Arlington Student Veterans of America chapter—Mav Vets—is hosting a Veterans Day tree dedication honoring D-Day soldier Clifford Stump, The Dallas Morning News reported. Stump, 98, was a U.S. Army artilleryman on June 6, 1944. The event acknowledges UT Arlington’s relationship with service members, students who have military connections, and the sacrifices made by their commitment to the nation and its people, said Dalton Owens, Mav Vets event spokesperson.

Education issues in Texas races

Rebecca Deen, UTA associate professor of political science, spoke with The Texas Tribune about a shift this year in local school board and state education board races. Deen said that both often experience low turnout, so candidates try to focus on hot-button issues. “The State Board of Education is not new to social movements,” Deen said. “What has come back again is the intensity of the debate in this education space."

Preserving historically Black communities

DFW residents explored paths to preserve historically Black communities at a UT Arlington workshop, the Fort Worth Report reported. The workshop was led by Diane Jones Allen, director of UTA’s landscape architecture program, and UTA Professor Kathryn Holliday as part of a three-day symposium honoring the 10th anniversary of the University’s Dillon Center for Texas Architecture.
