Measuring material surfaces
Researchers from the Positron Lab in the UTA Department of Physics utilized a process called auger-mediated positron sticking to develop a novel spectroscopic tool to measure the electronic structure of the surface of materials selectively, Physics Daily News reported. “At present, UTA probably has the only lab in the world that has a positron beam that can get down to the low energies needed to observe this phenomenon,” said Alex Weiss, chair and professor of physics.
Training STEM talent
Newly awarded federal funding will help a University of Texas at Arlington program continue training the next generation of STEM professionals, regardless of their academic background, Targeted News Service reported. UTA's Summer Undergraduate Research Program in Integrative Physiology has earned a five-year grant from the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The program supports the NIH’s goal to get more underrepresented minorities engaged in academic research experiences to increase the likelihood of their participation in STEM careers.
