Plastic waste from the COVID-19 pandemic
In a new study published in Sustainability, civil engineers from The University of Texas at Arlington quantified the increase in plastic waste during the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on landfill volume consumption. Comparing the amount of plastic waste in a landfill in Irving, Texas, to recent national statistics, the researchers found that the pandemic caused a 12% increase.
Female responses to drug use and addiction
The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Linda Perrotti, UTA professor of psychology, a three-year grant to support her research into the differences in somatic, emotional and motivational responses between males and females after discontinuing the use of morphine, Health & Medicine Business Daily reported. The study will address a systemic deficiency of data related to female experiences of drug use, addiction and recovery.
Cultural cartography
In his new book, The Geographies of African American Short Fiction, Kenton Rambsy, UTA assistant professor of English, examines geographical references within African American short stories, U.S. Fed News reported. He calls the book a "long-overdue" history of short stories in Black literature that explores the significance of story setting in racial representation.
