HP LaserJet M9050 MFP (Detailed summary)

This model replaces the HP LaserJet 9100 MFP originally listed on this page.
List Price: $13,799
Our test unit came with the optional 3000-sheet stapler / stacker
Conclusions from test: Recommended

General: The unit was a typical setup of an HP printer. Printing was impressive at 50ppm. Copy, print and digital send quality were excellent. Digital send was straight forward. No server services needed to send to e-mail. Document feeding was easy on single and two sided documents. The scanner scans both sides in a single pass, which makes this unit easy to use. The user must learn to describe the original and the output at the control panel. Controls are easy to use. Letter to tabloid sizing was automatic. Based on all factors, this unit is outstanding.

Negatives: Users need to take the time to learn the unit so they may take advantage of its features. Copy enlargement of two sided originals needed to be done from the glass. A short delay was noticed when coming from energy saver mode.

HP LaserJet 8550C MFP

List Price: $10,999.00
Our unit did not come with a document feeder
Conclusions from the test: Not Recommended

General: The unit set up was typical of an HP printer.  Print output was impressive but quite slow at 6ppm for color.  Black and white print speed was better at 24ppm.  The unit would not come out of energy saver mode for extended periods either for walk up copying or for print jobs from a queue or sent directly via LPR.  This was such an issue, it was very difficult to use.  Often the staff was quite frustrated.  Based on older technology than the 9100MFP, the 8550C MFP was much harder to use, and had the appearance of a printer that had the scanner added as an afterthought.  It is with regret that this unit was not recommended.  We look forward to testing a newer color model which we would hope would be a well-designed, integrated unit similar to the  LaserJet 9100 MFP.
