Prepare for Orientation

Advising and Registration

INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE STUDENTS

Academic advising is NOT included in New Maverick Orientation. Graduate students are often academically advised through a separate orientation offered by their academic department. If a departmental orientation is not offered, students should contact their academic department to schedule an advising appointment.

INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER STUDENTS

Academic advising is NOT included in New Maverick Orientation. Every transfer student comes to UTA at a unique place in their college career, so your first advising appointment is important to understand where you are in your degree completion at UTA. You should not feel rushed during that process. Therefore, students are encouraged to be advised prior to orientation so that we may assist you with the online registration process at orientation.

Transcript Evaluation

During your advising session, your advisor will need to review all of your previous transcripts and test scores. Transcript evaluation takes time, so please provide several days for our Admissions Office to process your transcript before meeting with your advisor. If you have questions about the status of your transcript evaluation, please contact the Admissions Office at 817-272-6287 or www.uta.edu/admissions/ask

Advising For Undeclared and Students Under 30 Hours

Students who have not yet declared a major and students who will transfer in less than 30 credits are advised through the University Advising Center. Please contact 817-272-3140 or uac@uta.edu to make an appointment, or stop by their office on the first floor of Ransom Hall.

Advising For Students Over 30 Hours

Student who will transfer in more than 30 credits are advised by their specific college or department. If you are unsure who your advisor is, please click on the link below:

INTERNATIONAL FRESHMEN

Academic advising for international freshmen will occur during New Maverick Orientation. All freshmen are advised through the University Advising Center. During orientation, you will meet with an academic advisor who is trained for your major. Your advisor will give you information about the curriculum and requirements for your degree, and will schedule your first-semester classes. The advising process takes place in three phases:

  • Advising Session – A group advising session will take place on day 1 of orientation. However, you will meet briefly one-on-one with your advisor to discuss your preferences and answer your questions.
  • Review your Schedule – After advising, you should review your schedule and explore their class options before returning for Day 2 of orientation.
  • Orientation Checkout – Before leaving orientation at the end of day 2, you will have the opportunity to reconnect with your advisor to address any unanswered questions you may have. You will be able to make schedule changes at this time.

Be patient. This process takes some time, but it is intended to provide you with a well-balanced and appropriate schedule of classes for your first semester.

Registration

At UT Arlington, Class registration is completed through MyMav, the student registration system. Students will register for their classes at their orientation session if they have been cleared by their advisor. Students that have not met with an advisor before their orientation session will not be able to register for classes at orientation. Students are encouraged to contact their advisor as soon as possible after they have been admitted to the university to learn about the advising process for their department.
