We're happy that you have chosen to major in philosophy and hope that you find your time in our department rewarding. We encourage you to continue in your study of philosophy. Not only does philosophical training benefit us personally, by making us more reflective and opening our minds to new possibilities, it also is extremely valuable toward preparing us for professional life. Philosophy graduates, as a group, are among the highest scorers on standardized tests such as the GRE and the LSAT.

Law schools and medical schools have long recognized that philosophy majors have strong reasoning skills, and now the corporate world, too, is expressing interest. Philosophy majors have gained a reputation for "thinking outside of the box" and coming up with interesting new solutions to problems. The skills developed by philosophical studies help us think more logically, see connections more quickly, and make well-reasoned investigations. In other words, a philosophical mindset may lead us to flourish both personally and professionally.

We strongly encourage you to extend your philosophical discussions beyond the classroom and take advantage of the opportunity to interact with faculty and other philosophy students through participation in the Philosophy Club, Philosophy Reading Group, and the Philosophy Lecture Series. Remember, philosophy isn't just a major, it is a way of life.
