    Section 6-901 Purpose of the Academy

    The Academy exemplifies the University's commitment to quality teaching in the classroom and brings richly deserved recognition to dedicated classroom teachers. The goals are to advocate the importance of teaching, to create an appropriate reward structure for teaching, to promote a sense of community among teachers, to serve as role models, to foster research on college teaching and learning, and to advise the institution on teaching policies and practices.

      Section 6-902 Membership

      1. Election to the Academy is limited to tenured members of the UT Arlington faculty who have made sustained significant contributions to education.

      2. The Provost will solicit nominations for new members of the Academy from the Academic Deans. The Deans will solicit nominations of faculty members from their academic units. The nomination procedure shall involve faculty and student input. Nominations from each academic unit shall be forwarded to the Leadership Committee of the Academy for review and recommendation to the Provost. The Provost will recommend up to five new members to the President for approval of these new members. Invitations to membership will then be extended by the Provost.

      3. The membership provides for up to five new members to be inducted each year. Each new member serves a term of six years on the Academy's Leadership Committee.

      4. Election to the Academy is a one-time honor; membership in the Academy is for duration of tenure at UT Arlington.

      5. Each member selected for Academy membership will receive a permanent salary increase of $2,500, a plaque, and other perquisites such as a special medallion to wear with commencement regalia. In addition, new members will have their names placed before the Vice Chancellor of the UT System with a request that they have conferred upon them the permanent designation of "Distinguished Teaching Professor," per Regents' Rules and Regulations, Rule 31001, ยง2.4(b).
