    Section 6-951 Purpose of the Academy

    The Academy exemplifies the University's commitment to quality research and creative activity and brings richly deserved recognition to dedicated scholars. The goals are to advocate the importance of research and creative activity, to create an appropriate reward structure for scholars, to promote a sense of community among scholars, to serve as role models, to foster research and creative activity, and to advise the institution on research policies and practices.

      Section 6-952 Membership

      1. The membership provides for up to four new members to be inducted each year, to give a steady state membership of approximately 24 members.

      2. Tenured faculty members who have made sustained significant contributions to research and creative activity and who have won either the Distinguished Record of Research or Creative Activity Award or the Outstanding Research Achievement or Creative Accomplishment Award are eligible.

      3. The Vice President for Research and the Provost will solicit nominations for up to two new members of the Academy from each Academic Dean. Deans must solicit nominations from faculty members in their units. The nomination procedure shall involve faculty input. Nominations from each academic unit shall be forwarded to the Academy of Distinguished Scholars for review and recommendation to the Provost and the Vice President for Research. The Vice President for Research and the Provost will recommend up to four new members to the President who will approve the new members.

      4. New members may serve in the Academy for a period of six years and are eligible for re-election after a period of two years as a non-member of the Academy.

      Each member selected will receive a permanent salary increase of $2,500. In addition to the salary increase, faculty members selected will also earn the permanent designation as Distinguished Scholar Professor and will be afforded other perquisites such as a special medallion to wear with commencement regalia.
