Use of Radiation Sources

Procedures
  1. Radioactive materials, radiation-producing machines, and lasers devices on this campus must be used in compliance with The University of Texas at Arlington Radiation Safety Manual and Part 25 of the Texas Administrative Code (TAC), Texas Regulations for Control of Radiation (TRCR) as adopted by the State Board of Health in accordance with the Texas Radiation Control Act.

  2. Licensing of all radioactive material, including naturally occurring, is required. Registration of all equipment designed to produce x-rays or other ionizing radiations is required. Registration of all class IIIb and class IV lasers is required.

  3. Faculty members planning any work with radioactive materials or radiation-producing machines, or Class IIIb or IV laser devices should first coordinate with the Environmental Health and Safety office (Radiation Safety Officer/Laser Safety Officer) and then the department chairperson to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. New activity involving radiation sources must be evaluated and approved by the University Radiation Safety Committee. The Committee is required to certify that the faculty member is qualified to handle and use the materials and equipment in a manner that will not endanger the environment or the campus population. The Committee is further charged with the responsibility of ensuring that laboratories and facilities are adequate to perform the intended work safely.

  4. Records, reports and notification requirements will be as specified in the University Radiation Safety Manual and 25 TAC ยง289 of the Texas Regulations for Control of Radiation.

  5. All radioactive waste disposal must be coordinated through the Environmental Health and Safety office (Radiation Safety Officer) to ensure compliance with all applicable State and Federal regulations and the guidelines in the University Radiation Safety Manual.

  6. The University Environmental Health & Safety office should be advised of contamination problems and activities.

  7. Copies of the University Radiation Safety Manual are available through the Environmental Health & Safety office.
