Going back to the Elizabethan era in the late 1500s, the elevation of an instructor to the level of professor or equivalent was celebrated by the presentation of a chair as a symbol of respect and elevation in status at a time when most people sat on stools, benches and the floor and chairs were both a luxury and a sign of honor. Today academic chairs and professorships, awarded to the very best faculty, are endowed positions that enable these faculty to further their scholarship, research, mentorship and engagement. They are established through the generosity of donors who are making an investment in excellence and the future of an institution. At UTA we are fortunate to have both tremendously talented, world-renowned faculty and generous donors committed to making a difference in the lives of our students through their gifts.
It was an honor to present medals and install each of the new holders of endowed chairs and professorships earlier this month. These faculty are a select group of our very best, representing scholarly leadership in varied disciplines. As individuals they are world renowned researchers and scholars, deeply engaged in furthering the discovery of knowledge, the expression of creative activity, and the furtherance of innovation and entrepreneurship. As a group they enable transformative educational experiences for all our students and are dedicated to assuring that each student reaches, and exceeds, her/his true potential. The complete list of donors and recipients can be found HERE in the event program.
I am deeply grateful to all the donors for their gifts. Their generosity not only enables these brilliant minds to continue engaging with and impacting our students, but helps transform families and our community, enabling positive changes that will leave marks on the sands of time.
