Associate Professor at Department of Electrical Engineering

David Wetz earned the B.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Texas Tech University in 2003. He also earned the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Texas Tech University in 2004 and 2006 respectively. During his tenure at Texas Tech, he worked as an undergraduate and graduate Research Assistant in the Center for Pulsed Power and Power Electronics where his research was focused in the areas of pulsed power system design, pulsed dielectric breakdown of liquids, and ion thruster optimization. He was recognized as the IEEE 2006 Pulsed Power Student of the Year. Upon graduation in 2006, he became a member of the research staff at the Institute for Advanced Technology (IAT) at the University of Texas at Austin as a Postdoctoral Fellow and later as a Research Associate. While employed there, his work was focused on advancing the development of electromagnetic launch systems. In 2008 he was recognized as an Outstanding Young Researcher at the 2nd Euro Asian Pulsed Power Conference in Vilnius, Lithuania. In August of 2010, he joined the faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Arlington as an Assistant Professor. He received an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award in 2011 and since joining UTA, his research has been focused in the areas of pulsed power, MicroGrid design and optimization, and understanding the limitations of using electrochemical energy storage devices in pulsed power systems.

Cooling of Cylindrical Energy Storage Devices

ThermAvant Technologies has proposed new and novel cooling geometries for high rate cylindrical energy storage devices. We are assisting with the characterization, modeling, and experimental validation of the cooling technologies.

Development of a MicroGrid Testbed at UTA

A MicroGrid testbed is being installed at the University of Texas at Arlington. The testbed will have roughly 1 kW of wind energy, 2 kW of solar energy, 1.2 kW of fuel cell energy, 2 kW of battery storage, and a connection to the leagacy grid installed. The testbed will be used to develop and experiment with novel MicroGrid architectures and control strategies.

Research was sponsored by the US Department of Energy from March 2010 - March 2013.

Development of Plasma Driven Electromagnetic Launcher for Low Cost Space Access
As part of an AFOSR sponsored MURI from 2005 - 2010, research was performed at the Institute for Advanced Technology at the University of Texas at Austin to develop a plasma driven electric launcher capable of achieving muzzle velocities in excess of 7 km/s. This is the velocity needed for an object to exit into Low Earth Orbit. Experiments using novel rail geometies and insulators were performed. Velocities of 5.2 km/s were achieved.
Effects of Unbalanced Voltage on the Operation Performance of a Three-Phase Induction Motor

 A CoServ customer has reported having a problem with a three-phase submersible pump that is used to provide water to a neighborhood. The pump’s protection system frequently detects a phase imbalance and shuts down the pump system. Research is going to be performed to measure and understand the cause of the phase imbalance. A solution to the problem, that will both prevent pump damage and shutdown events will be developed, experimentally tested, and proposed to the customer.

Fundamental Understanding of the Impact High Pulsed Power Loading has on a MicroGrid’s DC or AC Bus

The electrical architecture on the battlefield, either on land within a forward operating base or on a movable platform such as a ship, must be able to power a wide range of conventional and advanced loads. Many of the advanced loads draw rapid high power bursts of energy from the grid and are typically powered using their own dedicated power supplies. As the DoD attempts to transform their existing electrical grids into a more intelligent MicroGrid, the impact this type of loading has on the central DC or AC bus must be studied. The focus in this work is to understand how these types of advanced loads impact the quality of the voltage on the main bus of a MicroGrid.

Hybrid Electric Gun Feasibility Study

TRI/Austin has proposed to design, fabricate, and test an electro-thermal launcher as part of a feasibility test-bed for larger caliber launchers that will evolve into a replacement/upgrade for the C-RAM. Work at UT Arlington will focus on the electrical simulation modeling of the pulsed current discharge system.

Impact of Smart Meter RF Communications on Surrounding Electronics

Research sponsored by CoServ Electric Co-Op is being performed to understand how why the RF communications within Smart Meters are causing interference in nearby electronic devices, in particular on GFCI electrical outlets.

Inductive Heating of Materials for the Study of High-Temperature Mechanical Properties

A conductor material's mechanical strength decreases as its temperature rises but the magnitude of the degradation is dependent upon the rate at which the material is heated. In pulsed power experiments where the conductors can heat up to near there melting temperature in less than 1 ms, it is critical to understand the strength of the material when it is heated up at these rates. A novel inductive heater circuit topology was developed and installed on an an Electromagnetically Driven Expainding Ring experiment to study material strength as a function of heating rate. The research was sponsored by the US Army from 2006 - 2010 and was performed at the Institute for Advanced Technology at the University of Texas at Austin.  

Influence of High Pulsed and Continuous Magnetic Fields on the Corrosion and Microstructure of Metallic Conductors

Research is being performed for the Office of Naval Research to understand how pulsed and continuous magnetic fields impact the rate of corrosion formation on metallic conductors

Investigation of Aging Phenomena in Electrochemical Storage Devices when Cycled at Elevated Rates

Research is being sponsored at UTA by the US Office of Naval Research to understand the ageing mechanisms that occur in electrochemical energy storage devices such as lithium-ion batteries, electric double layer capacitors, and lithium-ion capacitors when they are charged and discharged at rates several hundred times their rated C values. The research was started in April of 2011 and is funded through September 2014

Investigation on the Effects of Transients on Commercial Electric Meters

Questions have arisen as to how the new electric Smart meters handle electrical transients when compared with the traditional mechanical meters. Research into these differences is being performed.

Pulsed Dielectric Breakdown of Liquids
Thesis and dissertation research funded  from 2003 - 2006 by Sandia National Laboratories. The research was performed at Texas Tech Univeristy and was focused on developing a better understanding of the processes that lead to the dielectric breakdown of water and on developing ways to increase water’s dielectric strength in pulsed, high-voltage systems.
Solid Armature Railgun Research

Novel rail and insulator configurations were tested in a 1 MJ and 2 MJ electromagnetic launchers at the Institute for Advanced Technology at the University of Texas at Austin in order to better undstand the basic physics of sliding electrical contacts and the damage mechanisms that lead to the failure of railgun bores. The research was sponsored by the US Army and US Navy.

Upon completion of this course students should be able to design pulsed power circuits, design pulse forming lines and high voltage switches, use Spice circuit simulator to solve various pulsed power circuits, understand the role materials plays in pulsed power, effectively use methods of grounding and shielding for pulse power testing, design diagnostics for the measurement of pulse power signals, and understand the applications of pulsed power technology.

EE 4340 - Concepts and Exercises in Engineering Practice
Integration of technical knowledge and skills with project planning, teamwork, and communication skills (written and oral).  A project-oriented approach is used including the preparation of literature-based research reports, research proposals, product development proposals, and project management plans.  Supporting topics: technical information resources, ethics, safety, intellectual property.  Students will begin their engineering capstone design experience, including team formation, project selection, background research, and preparation of a preliminary project plan.
