UT Arlington engineers are assembling a computer-based “genome” that will aid in the design and development of advanced new materials that are super hard, can resist extreme heat, are highly durable and are less expensive through a new, $640,000 National Science Foundation grant.

The work is funded through a 2011 White House “Materials Genome Initiative” intended to cut in half the time it takes to develop novel materials that can fuel advanced manufacturing. The effort has been compared with the national Human Genome Project launched in the 1980s.

Stathis Meletis, chair and professor of the Department of Materials Science & Engineering, is leading the interdisciplinary team, which includes Peter Kroll, an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and Jiechao Jiang, a research associate professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department.

The UT Arlington team will focus on the areas of extremely hard and high-temperature resistant coatings for advanced materials using current and new methods at the atomic and nanoscale level to achieve the project’s objectives.

“We will combine methods for designing and attaining this extremely hard and high-temperature resistant materials on computers at first. Eventually, we’ll synthesize these materials in the lab and test them,” Meletis said. “This could revolutionize future engineering.”

The new materials genome could be used in a number of advanced applications including turbine blades, reusable launch vehicles, hypersonic vehicles and thermal barrier materials designed to withstand temperature and radiation extremes in space, researchers said.

“The University is very enthusiastic about being part of this exciting and ground-breaking research,” said Khosrow Behbehani, dean of the College of Engineering. “This project not only benefits existing businesses that work with advanced materials but also will help boost emerging industries.”

Meletis’work is an example of research excellence at The University of Texas at Arlington, a comprehensive institution of almost 33,800 students and more than 2,200 faculty members in the heart of North Texas. Stathis Meletis, Chair of the Materials Science and Engineering Department, organized and chaired the 4th International Conference from Nanoparticles and Nanomaterials to Nanodevices and Nanosystems (IC4N) in Greece in June.

"The 4th IC4N Conference reached new heights in terms of quality, participation and international recognition. It was a resounding success with about 200 participants from more than 40 countries around the world," Meletis said.

The conference was opened by an inspirational Plenary Lecture by Nobel Laureate (Chemistry, 2011) Professor Dan Shechtman entitled, "The Discovery of Quasi-Periodic Materials."

Keynotes were delivered by Professors Stan Veprek ("Limits to the Preparation of Superhard Nanocomposites"); Valentine Vullev ("Biological Inspiration in the Development of Molecular Electrets for Energy Applications"); and Radek Zboril ("Iron-bearing materials in advanced environmental and biomedical nanotechnologies"). The conference involved more than 100 invited lectures by renowned researchers around the globe making IC4N a Nano forum of the highest quality. The poster sessions contributed to a vigorous and informal scientific and technical exchange.

The conference involved 11 special symposia that were planned to address the current state-of-the-art in nanoscience and nanotechnology as applied to energy conversion, human health, and environment. Challenging and rewarding research directions were identified by world experts in the field. The symposia provided a unique opportunity for networking with some of the top scientists in the world. A nanotechnology transfer workshop, From the Lab to the Marketplace, also took place to address issues relating to facilitation of recent nanomaterials and nanotechnology advancements to the marketplace.

This international conference took place in Halkidiki, Greece in June 15-19, 2008 and addressed global issues such as energy, human health and the environment. It was attended by more than 350 participants from more than 50 countries around the world and provided a stimulating environment for international collaboration and interaction.  There were more than 90 invited talks by renowed researchers. The Plenary Lecture was given by Nobel Laureate Professor, Sir Harry Kroto.
Efstathios (Stathis) I. Meletis

Dr. Meletis' research areas are in surface engineering, multifunctional thin films, nano-scale materials and material-environment interactions. He has invented novel plasma treatments for surface hardening, modification and producing functionally gradient surface layers.His group was the first to achieve self-assembling of perovskite-type oxides and metal/ceramic thin films with high aspect ratio.His recent work focuses on (i) vacuum and (ii) electrolytic plasma-assisted processing for applications spanning from aerospace to bio, (iii) multifunctional (electronic, magnetic, tribological, catalytic, bio, etc) nanocomposite thin films, (iv) scale effects on material properties, (v) self-assembling in inorganic materials, (vi) nanofabrication and (vii) discovery of new high temperature, oxidation resistance coatings. His research has been funded from NSF, NIH, NASA, DOE, ARO, ONR, DARPA, SERDP, NAVAIR, Lockheed-Martin and other federal and industrial sources.
