Assistant Professor-Environmental Engineering at Department of Civil Engineering

Dr.Hyeok Choi is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Texas-Arlington (UT-Arlington). Before joining UT-Arlington in August 2009, Dr. Choi was an ORISE (Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education) Research Fellow working at the National Risk Management Research Laboratory of US Environmental Protection Agency. In 2007, Dr. Choi received his Ph.D. from University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH, USA in Environmental Engineering and he obtained his BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from Sungkyunkwan University, South Korea in 1998 and 2000. His research interests include i) Physical and Chemical Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment, ii) In Situ Remediation of Contaminated Groundwater, Soil, and Sediment, iii) In Situ Sensing System for Environmental Monitoring, iv) Destruction of Emerging Chemicals of Concerns, and v) Green Synthesis and Environmental Applications and Implications of Nanomaterials. Dr. Choi has published more than 43 journal articles and 9 book chapters and delivered more than 27 keynote and seminar presentations and 123 conference presentations worldwide. Since he joined UT-Arlington, his research studies have been funded by National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and US Geological Survey.

Integrated Treatment of Perfluoroalkyl Compounds in Groundwater (The University of Texas at Arlington/Startup Fund, June. 1, 2011-N.A.) Due to their toxicity, prevalence, and persistence in the environment, perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFACs) widely used in fire retardants have attracted significant scientific, regulatory, and public interest. There is a fundamental and applied research need to develop cost-effective and practical in situ remediation technologies for groundwater contaminated with PFACs, keeping an important motto in mind, ‘flexibility and implementation of the technologies’. This study proposes an innovative idea for the integration of in situ sequestration of PFACs and their chemical decomposition. The idea is implemented by introducing, so called, reactive activated carbon (RAC) impregnated with various customized Fe nanoparticles (Fe oxides, zerovalent Fe (ZVI), palladized Fe (ZVI/Pd)). PFACs in groundwater are promptly adsorbed onto RAC and then simultaneously decomposed via various kinetics and pathways in the presence of various oxidants (oxygen (O2), hydrogen peroxide ((H2O2), persulfate (S2O82-), peroxymonosulfate (HSO5-)).

Decomposition of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products Using Advanced Oxidation Technologies (The University of Texas at Arlington/Startup Fund, Sep. 1, 2009-N.A.) The presence of persistent and toxic pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in water resources has generated considerable scientific, regulatory, and public interests, requiring the development of cost-effective technologies for PPCP treatment. Among many treatment technologies, special attention has been given to advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) where extremely strong and transitional radical species such as hydroxyl radicals (HRs) and sulfate radicals (SRs) are generated to attack organic contaminants. In this study, we investigate destruction of various PPCPs, including triclosan, sulfamethoxazole, and acetaminophen, using HRs and SRs-based AOTs.

Solar-Driven Photocatalytic Decomposition of Lethal Algal Toxins in Texas Water Resources (Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Norman Hackerman Advanced Research Program; 9/1/2014-8/31/2016; $140,847 including UTA costshare; PI: Dr. Choi): The increasing occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) alarms water and health authorities and general public in Texas. Some algae produce and release lethal biological toxins such as microcystins, the most powerful poisons. Consequently, removal of biological toxins in water resources is important, if feasible, on-site and in real-time with minimal efforts, less chemicals, and low energy inputs. Such an on-site treatment strategy also provides a systematic tool to protect living creatures and ecosystem in HAB sites. The goal of this project is to pioneer a high efficiency visible light-activated TiO2 photocatalytic process to decompose biological toxins in water resources on-site under solar radiation.

In Situ Sensing System for the Selective and Sensitive Detection of Biological Toxins in HABs (NSF/GEO/OCE;3/15/2013-2/29/2016)  The increasing occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in water resources worldwide is alarming the environmental and health authorities because of their potential to release lethal biological toxins, in particular,microcystins (MCs) produced from cyanobacterial HABs. Current monitoring methods employing on-site sampling followed by in-lab analysis of HAB toxins (direct micro-observation) are neither sustainable nor practical to meet the vast spatial and temporal measuring need. Alternatively, remote sensing approaches based on identifying standard color products from satellite images (indirect macro-observation) are useful for monitoring general algal bloom activities. However, such color products are neither specific to HABs nor necessarily indicative of toxin release. As a result, it is important to determine the toxic/non-toxic nature of algal blooms and even identify the species of HAB toxins in a more effective, sustainable, and responsive manner. In our efforts to find a complementary approach to the two different observing methods, the overall goal of this proposed study is to real-time monitor the level of MCs in situ using an innovative wireless sensor network.

In Situ Sensing System for the Selective and Sensitive Detection of Biological Toxins in HABs (NIH/NIEHS;09/24/2012-7/31/2015) The increasing occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in water resources worldwide is alarming the environmental and health authorities because of their potential to release biological toxins, in particular, microcystins produced from cyanobacterial HABs. Microcystins are among the most powerful natural poisons known. Exposure to microcystins can affect the number and diversity of wild animal populations, cause bioaccumulation of toxins in the tissues of fish and shellfish, and indirectly affect other organisms through the food chain and eventually humans. Methodologies for early detection or in-situ/remote sensing of outbreaks of the toxins would provide a major mechanism for reducing/preventing exposures to the toxins released by HABs. In this project, we propose to real-time monitor the level of microcystins in-situ using an innovative wireless sensor network.

The course represents the fundamentals and applications of various advanced physical and chemical unit operations and processes for controlling drinking water quality. The course will cover i) general overview on the standard, regulations, and goals of drinking water quality, ii) general discussion on organic chemistry for environmental studies, and iii) detailed discussion of the theory, design, and operation of advanced physical and chemical unit processes which have not been discussed in the previous courses (CE 5318 and CE 5319, Physical-Chemical Processes I and II), including but not limited to, sorption, centrifugation, osmotic pressure, membrane separation, chemical oxidation and advanced oxidation, UV technology, and disinfection.

The course represents the fundamentals and applications of various advanced physical and chemical unit operations and processes for controlling drinking water quality. The course will cover i) general overview on the standard, regulations, and goals of drinking water quality, ii) general discussion on organic chemistry for environmental studies, and iii) detailed discussion of the theory, design, and operation of advanced physical and chemical unit processes which have not been discussed in the previous courses (CE 5318 and CE 5319, Physical-Chemical Processes I and II), including but not limited to, sorption, centrifugation, osmotic pressure, membrane separation, chemical oxidation and advanced oxidation, UV technology, and disinfection.
