Professor at Department of Civil Engineering

Ardekani received his B.S. (1980), M.S. (1981), and Ph.D. (1984) in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and began a research and academic career at Virginia Tech in 1985.  Five years later he joined the UT-Arlington faculty of Civil Engineering, where he has served as the Chair of the Civil Engineering Department from 1999 to 2005 and is currently a professor of Civil Engineering.

His areas of expertise include traffic flow theory, energy and emissions models, traffic surveillance systems, intelligent transportation systems, toll pricing, emergency transportation management, and public transportation design and operations.  He also has also taught courses in highway geometric design, transportation engineering, traffic engineering, stochastic modeling, traffic flow theory, mass transit planning and design, and systems engineering.

Ardekani has served on a number of national committees including the TRB Committees on Traffic Flow Theory and Characteristics, Alternative Transportation Fuels, and Time-Sensitive Response and Incident Management as well as the International Committee on Engineering Design and Automation, the ASCE Subcommittee on Human-Powered Transportation, and the ASCE Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering.  He is also a charter member of the ASCE Transportation and Development Institute and has served as a member of the Board of ITS Texas.  He is also a member the American Society of Engineering Education and has served as an Associate Editor for the Transportation Science Journal as well as the Journal of Transportation Research-A.  He is a registered professional engineer in Texas and Virginia.

Sia Ardekani

Dr. Ardekani has over 30 years of experience as a transportation researcher and has supervised over 3 million dollars in research projects, including more than 2 million dollars in TxDOT sponsored projects. He has authored or coauthored more than 40 refereed journal publications on traffic flow theory and traffic safety as well as numerous other research and conference publications.Dr. Ardekani's areas of expertise include traffic flow theory, traffic surveillance systems, intelligent transportation systems, managed lane operations, roadway pricing, emergency transportation management, and public transportation design and operations.

Dr. Ardekani has led a number of projects related to calibration of travel time prediction models in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. One such study, conducted for the Dallas Area Rapid Transit, required travel time prediction models for diverting buses from their fixed routes to pick up passengers off route. In another study, he developed an incident management software tool to determine optimum traffic diversion routes around major highway incidents and blockages. The software development entailed extensive calibration of a travel time prediction model as well as incorporation of origin-destination estimation based on link volumes and route choice rules to re-assign the affected traffic to alternative routes.Other projects have included development of expert systems to set pricing strategies for managed lanes in order to achieve optimal performance from those lanes in terms of throughput, speed, fuel consumption, and emissions. As part of another recent study he has also developed a freeway incident rating system to improve freeway incident management and response.
