Student Feedback Surveys (SFS) for Fall '13 now active

The SFS process for organized courses following the standard 15-week schedule began on Wednesday, November 20. Access to the survey will close at 11:00 PM on Wednesday, December 4, i.e., before the final exam period commences. Please encourage your students to participate in the feedback process. One way to foster participation in the survey is to set aside time during class; students can use any internet-linked device to access their surveys through either the invitation sent via MavMail or via their Blackboard portal page. To learn more, visit the faculty page at the SFS website.

Faculty Mentor Program for 2014

UT Arlington's Faculty Mentor Program kicks off with a Mentor Orientation, December 9th, at which time mentor-mentee matches will be announced. Programming for mentees begins on January 10, 2014 with the first of 12 monthly workshops to support junior faculty success. Workshop topics include “Establishing a National Reputation” led by Kevin Schug, Shimadzu Distinguished Professor of Analytical Chemistry from Chemistry, followed in February with a presentation by Chris Ray, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies for the College of Education and Health Professions, on “Managing Grants.” More information about the Faculty Mentor Program will be available in future editions of FAN, and can be obtained by contacting Maria Martinez-Cosio, Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Development.

Is UT Arlington in session on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving?

The short answer to this frequently asked question is a simple "yes." In reality, however, student attendance on the Wednesday preceding Thanksgiving is often light, especially for classes that meet later in the day. How to deliver instruction that covers this unusual day on the university's official academic calendar is left to one's best professional judgment. For example, one might shift the day's scheduled activities to the web, thereby allowing students who aren't present on November 27 to engage the day's materials.

Reminder: REP/FDL submissions due December 3

Applications for Research Enhancement Program grants and for Faculty Development Leaves must be completed by 4:00 PM on Tuesday, December 3. For more information, visit the Faculty Programs page.

Did you know that ...

... There's no such thing as "stopping the tenure clock"? This oft-heard phrase isn't the most accurate description of what happens when a tenure-track faculty member requests or receives additional time before coming up for tenure. In such cases, a more apt expression would be "extending the pre-tenure probationary period." To learn more, including the circumstances under which requesting an extension is appropriate, check out UT Arlington's Handbook of Operating Procedures, Subchapter ADM 6-352, section E.
