Digital Certificate Requests

The University of Texas at Arlington is a federated member of InCommon; digital IDs and SSL certificates are provided at no cost to UTA faculty and staff.  In certain cases, the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) may delegate certificate issuance to an employee outside of the ISO.  If you would like to request access, please email

To request an SSL certificate, please refer to the following steps:

  • If you are unsure how to create a CSR, please refer to instructions for RHEL/Apache or Windows/IIS
  • Create a CSR (Certificate Signing Request)
    • When generating a CSR, be sure to use a 2048-bit key
    • Your CSR must include the fully qualified domain name (FQDN)
    • All other fields will be overwritten by InCommon
  • Email your CSR to, and include the operating system of the server
    • If you are making the request on behalf of another, please include the contact information for the person who should receive the certificate and follow up information regarding renewals
  • Once your certificate has been approved, it will be emailed to the point of contact

The following table indicates the terms traditionally given to certificates:

To renew a certificate, please refer to the instructions that accompany the notice that you received approximately 30 days before expiration.  If you are unable to renew your SSL certificate, please contact the ISO via email ( or by phone (x25487).
