President Karbhari

Dear Members of the UTA Community:

Since 2015 we have been following a path charted by our Strategic Plan 2020: Bold Solutions | Global Impact and we have made phenomenal progress due to your hard work and commitment.

Recognition as a Carnegie R-1 “Very High Research” institution, ranking among the top tier of institutions by U.S. News & World Report, designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, being listed as the top institution in Texas for veterans and 7th in the nation by Military Times, and being recognized as 4th in the nation in the 2019 Times Higher Education Top universities in the world global impact rankingsthese are just a few of the recognitions received by UTA in recent months as we continue to strive for ever-higher levels of excellence.

The hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff has led to record enrollment levels, a 45% increase in degree attainment, and significant increases in 4- and 6-year graduation rates over the past 5 years. Recent data released by UT System showed that our students receive the highest average first year salaries of all UT System Academic Institutions. Research expenditures have continued to climb, surpassing $100M in the last fiscal year. With five Members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on our faculty we have for the first time achieved all metrics for consideration as Texas’ next Tier-1 University and are on track to be so designated at the end of the legislatively mandated two year period. With 15 members of our faculty now honored as fellows of the National Academy of Inventors, UTA ranks 6th in the nation and 1st in the state of Texas as we continue to build an innovation ecosystem within and around our campus. Just two weeks ago the Carnegie Corporation of New York announced that Prof. John Garrigus was awarded a prestigious Carnegie Fellowship, one of only 32 awarded for 2019 and the only one from Texas, further cementing our growing reputation in the social sciences and humanities.

These and so many other achievements have been made possible by the tremendous efforts of our internationally renowned faculty and dedicated staff, who have stayed laser focused on the goals of our Strategic Plan 2020: Bold Solutions | Global Impact as we endeavor to provide transformative educational experiences to all our students and ensure that a UTA education is made available without constraints on time, space, and location.

Since the summer of 2018 we have been engaged with assessing our progress and re-evaluating our goals and initiatives with a view to updating our plan for the next five years (2018-2023). A significant number of you have been involved in these discussions and in creating a draft of our updated plan. The plan is bold, forward-thinking, and continues to focus on student success and how we as an institution can best impact the DFW megacity in the making, our great state, and nation.

A number of symposia and sessions have already been held to brief the campus and get additional feedback. Details of these, including presentations, can be found on the Symposia, Fora and Discussion Sessions page. Additional sessions on specific topics will continue to be held as a means of both sharing information and increasing discussion and collaboration on key topics across campus. I encourage you to attend those of interest to you and share your thoughts and ideas as together, we continue on a trajectory to pre-eminence.
