Courtesy Titles

In general, do not use the courtesy titles Mr., Mrs., or Ms. If the reference serves to avoid confusion, Mr., Mrs., or Ms. may be used in the second mention. Never use Miss.

Jeff and Joan Darby attended the reception. Mrs. Darby presented an award.


For people with Ph.D.s and M.D.s, use Dr. on the second reference. Never use courtesy titles and degrees together.

Marketing Professor John Jones presented a paper. Dr. Jones is a graduate of the University. Jones was an engineering major.
