ARLINGTON - An annual art exhibit opened Monday at The University of Texas at Arlington to honor the diverse population of Hispanic students, faculty, and staff on campus.

Semana de Cultura is part of UT Arlington's Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. It features the work of Hispanic art students. The exhibit began Monday, Sept. 21, at UT Arlington's Gallery West, Studio Arts Center. It will conclude Friday, Sept. 25, with a 6 p.m. reception.

Semana de Cultura began in 1970 when the Association of Mexican American Students (AMAS) saw a need on campus for a program to celebrate Hispanic culture. It was called "Semana Chicana."

As the celebration grew in popularity, the name was changed in 1985 to represent all Hispanic cultures. It is free and open to the public between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The exhibit includes paintings, photography and short films and is hosted by the Student Art Association and Art and Art History Department. The Office of Multicultural Affairs is sponsoring the event.
