ARLINGTON - Individuals with disabilities can try various sports at adaptive sports clinics and intramural programs this fall at The University of Texas at Arlington.

All mobility impaired individuals can attend the free clinics, said Doug Garner, head coach of the Movin' Mavs. The team is a seven-time, national champion. Disabled military veterans and youth are especially encouraged to attend the clinics, he said.

"Part of our mission as a U.S. Paralympics sports club is to educate people with disabilities about sports, recreation and the local programs they can participate in," Garner said.

Paralympic Sport Arlington, a UT Arlington program, serves disabled individuals in addition to the Movin' Mavs program.

The first clinic is Saturday, Sept. 19, at the P.E. Building, 801 Greek Row Drive, for track and field, swimming, indoor wheelchair soccer and wheelchair tennis. Tennis will be taught by Steve Welch, a Paralympic gold medalist and former Movin' Mavs athlete.

At the Oct. 17 clinic, Pam Fontaine will teach table tennis. She is a member of the national collegiate table tennis champions at Texas Wesleyan University.

Power wheelchairs will be included in indoor wheelchair soccer, a new sports offering for the disabled. It is included in the Sept. 19 clinic.

"Indoor wheelchair soccer integrates power chairs and manual chairs," Garner said. "Every team has to have two people in power chairs and three people in manual chairs."

Intramural programs for UT Arlington students include a bocce' tournament Oct. 8 and a 3-on-3 wheelchair basketball tournament Nov. 16. Any student may play, but all players will use adaptive equipment.
